Llj's 8G... Yuma/zoanthid Garden

This tank looks great! I may be coming over to the salty side this week, one of my sisters friends told her he didn't want an old 10 gallon salt tank and she thinks he said he'd give it to me for free, but my parents said if not free I could spend no more than $25 and a painted mailbox on it. Hopefully he said free :D

Thanks for the compliment. I do my best & I'm still learning.

10g is a rough first SW tank. I do more maintenance on my picos than on my 36g. Just saying.

Yeah but you get what you can get. It's about 2 years old apparently and it's got some LR but not sure on corals and 7 fish (not sure on types) and I think he said it had a sump, but imnot sure may have a fuge. I probably wouldn't add much else to it just have it to show and keep nice. What all must you do to maintain a sw? I find out how much it'll cost me, if not free, tomorrow. He lives in our neighborhood so would be an easy move.

First, if it's a 10g and it has 7 fish, I'd rehome most of them. Go have a read of the pinned topics in the Marine chitchat section. There's a link to it in my signature.

@Biulu - sps (small polyp stony coral) At this point in time, I've only had soft corals and Large-polyped stony corals (my sun corals)

I think when he said fish he also meant inverts were included but if not I'll just give a few to that neighbor of mine with the 125 gallon, if they're compatible, if not my LFS for sw gives you 1/2 of what a sw fish is worth in store credit so I could get a few other things instead.

And are these more difficult to keep? What is the difference? Sorry, but I know next to nothing about sw...

They are the most difficult to keep as a group. Soft corals don't have the calcium skeleton, large polyps have larger polyps and small polyped have smaller polyps. They usually require more light and better water quality. The montipora is a beginner sps and while the pocillopora is an sps, it isn't one of the more difficult ones. The palythzoa or paly for short is a soft coral. All of my corals in my 8g are soft corals right now. :) I'm excited, it's a nice development. They are frags from another hobbyist so it's a nice practice session. If they do well, then great. If they don't do well, I'm not out a huge amount of money.

Yeah, a 10g really shouldn't have more than 2 fish, IMO. Of course there are those that say you can't have any fish or just one. Depends on who you talk to. There are different schools of thought on reefing right now. I've seen very successful systems with 2-3 properly selected fish and systems with only 1 fish. It really depends. But hehe, not 7. Hopefully he's talking inverts too.

Hopefully, but if not I'll get em better homes and do a few inverts with 2-3 well selected fishies. ;)

More like 2 well-selected fish. I said I've seen successful systems with 3, but I prefer 2.

Oh ok. What do you suggest for a 10 gallon, I mean it kinda depends what he's got in there already, but what fish go good in that size?

Need to know what he's got in there already. But small goby/shrimp pairs are great, maybe firefish if you have lid, clown gobies, maybe a dotty back. Not much else to be honest, and you couldn't have all on that list like maybe 2 max and you have to know if they're compatible.

Lots to think about when you go salty. My mind goes a mile a minute.

Update time!

Sorry it's been a while. I got my first set of frags in the mail.

1 Rainbow pocillipora
1 Pink Montipora undata
1 green infusion paly

Haha, very small, but very healthy. Also got a bonus bag with a very tiny zoa and asterina stars. The stars were put in my 8g refugium. Hopefully, I can get a population going for a harlequin shrimp.

Peechur time. Already they are opening. Got the frags Monday. The frags will stay below for a while. I don't want them to get stressed by the halide. I'll move them up gradually.

Nice! :good: looks like my salty dream will have to wait. The 10 gallon was fw. Oh well. I will do sw later on.
