Livebearers - Stocking and Fry

I recently had guppy fry... 4 days ago. I have 2 females and I want male, because of its colors and all... but I want to keep at least 2 of my babies, what should I keep, 2 females or 2 males? Cause I think at the end I will alwys have pregnant females either way...

Annastasia-This is one of the most informative posts I've ever read-it immediately needs to be pinned!!!!

I have a question but:

I'm about to stock my first tank (yes, don't worry I'm fishless cycling exactly like it says) and it's almost ready will this work?

Mollies, Guppies, Platies and possibly some Endler's, Swordtails or Plecos.

Reccomend any other fish?
Which fish should I get?
How many of each?

Thank you,

(My tank is 35 Gallon) (132 Litres)

theres a reasonably sized tank TBH, if i was you id get maybe a pair of rams, gold maybe, or a pair of dwarf gourami, then maybe up to 10 of any of above, so maybe 3 female platy's, 1 male,2 swordtails and 4 guppy's, then maybe get a smallish plec, try a L260'

i bought my mollies at the LFS and the female had babies in the fish bag ! is this weird or does it happen regulary?

Yes it can due to the female being in a stressed situation.

I would have both being females. Reasoning why is because the males can be aggressive towards each other if there are not enough females around. You usually want 1 male to every 3 females in the tank.

hi - is like to ask....

about livebearers - very nice having little babies.... but

if i have them in a community tank - (e.g guppies) then they have babies.... and i dont put them in a breeding net - are the parents likely to eat them???

i dont particularly want to be overrun by babies - but would like a few!!!

what fish would keep the numbers down which i should add ???

(community tank 200 liters...)!

good read.

my first batch of swordtail fry.. "I want to keep them all" and then the second third and forth... "oh no"... and then the 5th.. a huge molly batch over 60.. .. gave me over 90 fry... I gave them all a 29g tank but trying to get rid of them here in the north is next to impossible.. I've only gotten rid of 6 so far.

Really useful information, scares me a little because I know I'm going to get too attached when my mollie eventually has her fry and wont want to give them away! I deff dont want them to be eaten either :(

Is it okay to keep just 1 male on its own with other breeds of fish? I have 1 male dalmation mollie, 1 female dalmation and 1 black mollie, but the male just pesters the other dalmation one. I dont think I'd be able to cope with the many fry to come so was just wondering if it would be okay to have a seperate tank for the male and keep him with other breeds rather than other mollies?

Thanks
Lisa

With all that's been said, there is little else but to say, I agree. Great article.

Nice resurrection there Noledoc, welcome to the forum.
We seldom see a subject over a year old dug back up.
Do you have any specific questions? We would all look forward to hearing about your own experiences with livebearers.

how often should newborn guppy fry be fed, and what is the best food for them. what is the best H2o temperature

I have 30 newborn guppys and need to know how often to feed them defrosted brine shrimp babies or finely crushed flake... also is the egg mixture I have heard about advised? It makes the water SO dirty.. is it realy worth it ? do they realy thrive better on it?

what are some unusual livebearers...other than platties, swords, mollies or guppies? Are there any other livebearers available.
