Can I have live sand in a fresh water aquarium. I am asking because I am getting some shell dwellers and want sand, but I found some gravel that is the samle color as san, and looks like it too, but it si just small gravel. Would shell dwellers be fine in gravel? I read the they need sand to dig, is this true? Any help will be greatly appriciated. :good:

Live sand is for saltwater only. I think really small gravel should be fine, but if you really set on sand, just go to home depot or lowes and get some play sand from the building supplies.

LIve sand as in the type for saltwater. I would not use it. It could mess with your Ph because it sometimes has crushed coral and other bits of shells. It would be a waste of money to use live sand. Because all the little organisms that are in the live sand will die off in fresh water.

Just get some Play ground sand. or Pool filter sand. Why cheaper and safe.

I don't want to use play sand because it takes forever to rinse. I will look into it though, it looks as my only soloution.

Get sand from your LFS then this takes much shorter period to rinse tbh I don't even rinse I just let it settle then gravel vac and this sucks the finest particles up.

i used *carib sea* its almost white !

no rinsing involved, at all .

Where did you get that sand and how much is it ?
we are moving house soon and thinking of changing the set up. but will be keeping 50% of the water from our current set ups.
