how do you know a rock is a live rock? (whats the differnce)

and is it illegal to take live rocks from the sea ?

Live rock is not actually rock, but the coral skeletons of the reef that have been knocked from the main reef into the rubble zone.

I seem to recall it is illegal to collect from almost all reefs, but you can collect from the rubble zones nearby.

Live rock is filled with life. Inverts, MacroAlgae, Corraline Algae, Bacteria, Sponges, etc....Dead rock has nothing on it, its just the calcium carbonate structure that contributed to a reef. It could be illegal to take anything from your local beach/coast, so its best to check with a local authority or council to make sure its Ok before you proceed! :good:

dude just get some live rock. who cares. if they catch just say u didnt know. u want it for souveneir(spelling check pls) and if u get away then i guess its legal :good:

that kind of attitude is one of the reason that we CANT take rock and fish and corals from some places. Because people dont care enough to follow the rules and be responsible both in regards to the law, and to the local fish/coral/invert/LR population. Check first.

i agree with that 100 %

i could make so much money if i just took it and sold it on ebay or aquabid

but i belive that its just so wrong

Ignorance of the law is not a defense.

In the Virgin Islands, it is permissible to take dried-white coral rock from high up on the beaches, some of which are not sand beaches but entirely these dead coral rocks. They must be dry, in stacks above where normal high tide reaches. You can tell by the look of the rocks. Take the wrong stuff, 10 days in the slammer.

But the rules vary. It is different, for example, in the Keys I think.

Plus, not all rock will do. You only want rock that originated from a reef, or the homemade agrocrete.

Yea, that is a good subsitute. There was a good thread on here about home made LR not too long ago, go dig for it, that could be a good subsitute
