it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission
managed to get some live daphnia today and dropped some into my female tank, they went mental chasing it round the tank, (for those of you that don't know, daphnia swim around in the water not just stay still). my 2 yr old sat glued to the fish tank watching the females chase and catch each 1. it was worth it to get 5 mins peace never mind for the enjoyment of the fish

I love watching daphnia even without fish involved. They're so interesting and cool B)

Daphnia are also known as - Sea-Monkeys!! They are sold as pets! I have some!
I haven't had the heart to feed mine to my fish! I have several in a proper tank! I love them dearly! I am glad that your fish are enjoying them though! I just can't do it..I almost did once but then took one look at them and couldn't do it!!

I have triops, sea-monkeys and exo-petz!! They are three completely different things!
Sorry about the mistake about daphnia and brine shrimp! I knew that really...just not thinking!! I think exo-petz might be Daphnia whereas as you correctly say Brine shrimp are sea-monkeys!
Sea-monkeys and triops are COMPLETELY different although the idea is similar.

You guys make me want some daphnia... poor daphnia-less me

Triops - Similar idea to sea-monkeys but look, act and are generally completely different.
Triops are FAR bigger and can be kept - when large enough in a tropical fish tank -although I have NO experience of mixing them with tropical fish and not sure I would recommend it as they create a lot of poo!! They can be fed with their own food but they also like to have treats that I give to the fish - such as veg, bloodworms, frozen food. Triops can grow up to 3-4 inches although mine are only 2 and a bit but they are still young!!!
There are also exo-petz which are bigger than sea-monkeys and hardier. They play more and you get more creatures in one lot than you do with sea-monkeys or triops.
I have all three and love all of them!
I have attached two pictures - of triops and sea-monkeys. You can see an egg sac on one of the sea-monkeys. Hope that helps!! All three can be easily brought on e-bay for good prices!

i had seamonkeys once!they lived ablut 6 months until i forgot to feed them :byebye: .They were really interesting.I was planning on getting some more bu i lost the little tank thing where you keep them.

I love feeding live food to my fish. Sounds kinda cruel I guess but it's far more natural for the fish and some of them do get away for a day or two. Mostly any that escape get got by the nocturnal lot tho. :shifty: Even my live bearers never successfully raise any fry since they all get eaten within a week. Am hoping to change that once the livebearers have their own tank. Be good to see fry able to grow up for a change.
Hugs,
P.

xxSarahxx - thanks for the photos. I'm old as dirt and have never seen a sea monkey. I've always wondered what they were.

I would SERIOUSLY recommend sea-monkeys, triops and exo-petz. Sea-monkeys more than anything else though.....although triops are that bit bigger so can be more fun....my exo-petz are still onyl 2mm so not sure what they will be like yet.....will keep you updated on their progress though!! I love them all!!
They have characters too, each uinique, etc. I love my fish dearly but it's great to have these guys around. They will last forever too.....all you have to do is let the tank dry out when/if they all die (they do breed - egglayers) wait a week or so and then add more bottled water. Then more will hatch!! It's great! They are known to be pre-historic too!
Google them!!! It's well worth it. They are fascinating! I love them anyway!! If you would like any more information please feel free to PM me.

i had seamonkeys when i was little, didn't last long but its probably what got me hooked on fish. iv seen the triop and seamonkey brands at walmart and pretty much any lfs, i think their great fun to watch.

i just started my own daphnia culture last week in a 1g bucket, they are wild daphnia so they arnt as large as the traditional cultures u would buy from a lfs, but they are interesting to watch. they breed like mad as well, started out with lake water 7 days ago with maybe 3 daphnia that i was in there, now iv gottt have well over a hundred.

Anyone got any experience of putting Triops in with tropical fish?? They need the same conditions?? I know I already said about the waste products but just wondering! Obviously sea-monkeys and these exo-petz things would get eaten but Triops probably not as they are that much larger, and better protected!
I am NOT planning on doing it I was just wondering!
