First of all, I only set my tank up on Saturday. I put sand straight in and also an entire bottle of bacteria, so I'm assuming it's something to do with both of them. There's no fish in it.

When I leave my tank with just the pump (and heater etc) running, it's not a problem. But as soon as I put on the attatchemnt that makes bubbles, there's suddenly thousands of little specs floating around. Is this normal, and if so what is it? Should I be keeping the bubbles on to get rid of it all faster? Or will it be there regardless and I'm just being dumb?

hiya

confused........little specs ???

get rid of it all > the specs?

eh? > sorri

Did you wash the sand off really good before putting it in the tank???

:fish:

if the air stone or bubble curtain is too close to the sand it'll stir it all up.

We did wash the sand, yes. We might have not done a very good job though haha, if that was the case how long would all this go on for?

It's quite a big tank so none of the bubble flow is anywhere near the sand.

Sorry, I know this whole thing is probably a really dumb question :(

Sorry, the tank is 125l. I have no idea about the rest of it's stats yet as I'm yet to do any water tests - didn't see the point for a few days at least.

OK, I don't think it can be the sand> I sort of experimented by scooping up a bit of the sand with the end of the net and dropping it back in, it just went straight back to the bottom. The specs are kind of white coloured - they are small but noticeable and they are kind of covering the tank, haha. If I take the air pump attatchment that makes the bubbles off they go away though :/

hi

is it a "venturi" system on ur filter? this makes tiny bubbles (almost as though tank water looks carbonated!!!!!) these rise to surface and pop increase surface area to allow gas exchange

if dont like it then maybe just have a stronger air pump or longer air stone?

I'm not sure if it's the Venturi, I've looked it up online and it didn't make it any clearer. The specs don't look like bubbles though, they are slightly larger than grains of sand and wiggle around a fair bit rather than just going upwards. It seems strange if it's supposed to look like that because it makes it really hard to see anything. I don't know if maybe it just needs cleaning - it's only been sitting there for a few days though and I was told I shouldn't clean it until I've put fish in because of the bacteria.
