As we are leaving church today Linda says, "let's go for a ride, I'll drive." I, never question a Spartan Lady, so off we go, her behind the wheel. After a coffee stop, she asks me to drive because we had a morning snow, and she does not like driving on a slippery road. After getting an address off I go. Half hour later we turn down a little street in a little village. Out comes a woman with a box. Inside the box 3 water filled bags, each holding two angel fish with quarter sized bodies. Linda gives the lady a 20 and the lady gives Linda the box.

Linda had me prep a 29 about a month ago, I thought it was for some baby sailfin Molly she is raising from fry. NOPE, she apparently had this angel fish buy set up a while ago. So now we have 6 angels.

Two are solid silver, 2 have black stripes, and 2 are obvious Koi. I asked Linda what the "breed" was on the four. She said she did not know and told the lady not to tell her. She wants to research them herself.

They are currently happily swimming in the tank.

Merry Christmas to us.

LOL! I'll trade ya my new tank build for Linda! :) That was REALLY nice of her! :)

Not sure why as my mom bred and sold them but I've never kept Angels...

If i understand the description you have two platinum angelfishes (the ones that are solid silver); two silver angelfishes (the platinum colour with black stripes) and two koi - do not ask me why striped angelfishes are called silver - it always throw me off.

While young this will work well but when they get older.... you will need to upgrade that 29 to well - i recommend an 800 ;) After all if you are going to get a larger aquarium you might as well make it as large as possible.

She, notice I say she not I, will raise them for a bit in the 29. Sometime early next year the 90- gallon and 44-gallon tanks will be ready. Her intent is for two angels in each if we are lucky enough to have them pair. The remaining two will be rehomed.

She has plans ... OMG she has plans so no more mention of 800 or even 100-gallon tanks please.

Ok. I will only mention 1000 gallon aquariums and not 800. Sorry !!!

Let me tell you a little story which i found quite amazing. The pet shop near me had this super large aquarium - i think it was 1000 gallon but might have only been the size i am no longer allowed to mention. Anyway some guy came in said he wanted to buy it. Anyway it was huge i think 3 ft wide and 12 feet long and 36 inches high. Not sure of the length but longer than my 10 footer.

So i'm like how many people did it take to lift that thing and the shop owner tells me two and I'm like WHAT only two ? Well the guy who purchase it was in construction and he had this gizmo with straps that he used to just pick the whole thing up and carry it to the truck then he used that gizmo to take it off the truck and carry it into the house and set it on the stand.

So you see what two people can do if they really want.... so think about it. You and linda !

Totally unrelated i see there is a movie on called Grandmother got run over by a Reindeer so that is something i have to think about now after all i dont' want granny to get run over by a Reindeer :(

My first angel spawn was over 500 eggs. The second 500 followed 2 weeks later. that was when I realized I wanted nothing to do with breeding angels. I did do a bit of research however, I was told that for every spawning pair of angels I had I would need a coiple of 55 gallon grow tanks. That sealed the deal.

So, be careful what you wish for

You are absolutely right - it was silly of me to suggest 1000 gallon aquarium for his three pairs - he will need 2000 gallons.

That's why they sell these but I am too old and prefer others to do the heavy lifting ;):

Wonderful! Last year I ordered 6 angels with the intention of finding a pair and rehoming the rest. The seller sent me TWELVE LOL (angelmania.net- they are great, btw).

I raised them in a 75 gallon tank and they got along very well for about 6 months. Then I found my pair and got the rest off to the club to rehome- except 1. I could NOT catch him. So, now I have 3- 2 males and a female. Mostly they're fine- there's lots of plants etc., so the pair have their end of the tank and the lonely heart guy has his. The 2 males do duke it out some, but not enough for any real damage.

It was SO fun to raise them- they were about between a nickel and a quarter when I got them. I really didn't think they'd live, but I followed the seller's acclimation procedures (2 weeks of quarantine) to the T and they all thrived.

I posted here about them. Have fun with the angels! they are great fish.

We think the angels are beautiful to look at an observe. We have one, (started with two) that we bought from the fish store. She was dime sized and is now large, maybe silver dollar. So graceful and she eats snails right of our fingers. A real delight. She is becoming a bit aggressive with her tank mates, molly and swords, but so long as they leave her area alone she is OK with them.

Thanks for the heads up twotankamin. We are not, or at least I am not, interested in breeding them and will take measures to minimize the population issue. Any children will be unintended consequences, and I am fairly ruthless when necessary.

805 gallon tanks are good...

So are angelfish.

I kept angels for many years, and only worried about breeding them when I wanted to breed them. In a community tank, all spawns were picked off by tankmates, and angels are not as ferocious in their broodcare as most other Cichlids. They'll kill each other, but tankmates get out of their way. They can be rough, and in a 29, it will be cramped for even 2. But they can take a year to grow to good breeding size.

If Linda suggested you take a ride with a secret destination, and you got angelfish, you have absolute proof she hasn't had a secret life in the organized crime business.

Just be aware angelfishes do not get along in a group. I have a 600 (10x4ft) and with 4 angelfisehs they collect at least twice a week to fight. Now flag cichild or b. cupido - they get along in groups... as well as keyholes (for the most part).
