Hi people,
The other day my girlfirend and I were buying goldfish for her brother and sister. We picked out three, payed for them then headed home. On the way home I noticed that there was an extra fish in the bag. He looks pretty beat up so I took him to my house and put it in an old fish bowl. Just felt like telling people.

A similar thing happened to me, except it was an oto fry when I bought some otos. Sadly, it died :(

Good luck with your new fish

I hope it isn't a goldfish you put in the bowl as if so it wouldn't be getting any better.

What kind of fish is it and what do you think is wrong with it?

It is a goldfish.
He is by himself in a fish bowl. I don't think that he is sick hes just beat up from the other fish, he's really small. It looks like some scales are missing.
And yes free fish are nice :D

Are you going to be keeping it in the bowl?

Free fish are all well and good but not if you don't have the facilities to take care of it.

I wouldn't put in my 20 gallon in fear that it might spread some disease, plus it is a cold water fish. Goldfish are normaly kept in fish bowls like the one I have... Are you saying I should move it? If so were?

In my and many others' opinion goldfish should not be kept in bowls and in fact they need very large volumes of water per fish compared to tropicals. Some people say 10US gallons per fish!! I cannot do that but I do understand it. I think as long as the fish have room to swim and the parameters are good then it's ok as long as it's in a fairly big, filtrated tank.

Goldfish are very messy and so need a lot of water to dilute the amonia they produce down to safe levels. Goldfish can survive in bowls for a short time but not for the 37+ years of their lifespan. Also, what kind of goldfish is it - Types of Goldfish? They actually get very big, fancy one get mans' fist size and commons/comets got 10"+ if they can!!

Please do not think I am trying to get at you. It's an honest mistake, I am jus trying to help. :)

I don't think you are getting at me, im just making sure I do this right. I always thought that goldfish have adapted to how messy they are. I agree that they are a messy fish so maybe my bowl is big enough to put a small filter in. The type of goldfish I think is a common one, at the shop it said feeder goldfish.
Thanks

The average life-span of a goldfish is only 1 year even though their actual life-span is 37. They can live for a time in their own waste but they will not last long and will be plagued with disease as well as being stunted.

How much water would you say is in the bowl?

Maybe a gallon and a half. It is a Big wal-mart fish bowl, Im not completely sure just a guess. I could put it in a 3 gallon tank?

That's not much, 3 gallons would be much better obviously. Do you think you could get a little tank in the future? Not much, maybe 8 or 10 galls? I don't think it would cost much more for a bigger one, maybe get one second hand? Or, in your lfs do they have those things that are pastic and rectangle shaped and can be used for fish and insects? They have a lid. That could be ok and I think they are cheap too.
