is there a certain amount of time the lights should be kept on for for trpicasl fish?

either to much or to little causing damage?

it all depends on if you are just using the lights to view your fish or if you are using them for plants. if its just for viewing your fish then it is not critical a couple of hours when you are at home is fine but if you have plants then they need to be on for at least 10 hours to stimulate growth
