So my Betta Sam just got a new light bulb today. He lives in a planted 5 Gal acrylic aquarium which came with an incandescent light. His new bulb is a 16W fluorescent bulb that screws into the regular bulb socket…

I did this because the plants in the aquarium were looking a little yellow (suggestions on plants welcome also). But about a half hour to an hour after I changed the bulbs he started puffing up his gills and fins… at me! Seemed like he was complaining to me about the new light. It’s been several hours and he flares up maybe 1 or 2 out of every ten minutes. He seems to be doing it less as time goes on…

I’ve had him three years and this is very odd behavior for him. Should I be concerned? Will he get used to the light and relax? Should I change the bulb? Any other thoughts?

Wou. 3 years. Good job! You better change back to what he get used to. :) My two cents. He might saw you too clear and you scare him. LOL

My guess is that he's having to re-get used to the way things look under the new lighting.
As long as that decreases over time, I would not worry about it.
Just keep an eye on him...
Good luck :)
