Hi I'm quite a newbie to both fish keeping and forums but the problem I have is this
I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks at the end of August - I've had my tank running for just over a year now.
I have a family member to feed the fish but she's only coming in once day ie the lights would be left on for 24 hours or more - will my fish be unhappy in the dark for a fortnight? :/

Ace, nailed it!!! get a timer and you don't need to use for vacation only. I run all of my tanks 12 hours on 12 off for the lights and let timers handle it all so all I need to worry about is water changes, feeding, algae scrubbing and filter maintenance.

Im with Tanked and Ace, I use one of those plug in timers, they are about a fiver from a hardware store. As Tanked said you can use it all the time.

Tanked

so all I need to worry about is water changes, feeding, algae scrubbing and filter maintenance.

You could get some fishies to clean the algae for you :p

yup those timers that you can use to turn on lamps when your not home to make it look like you are home/

If you don't have live plants I feel you don't need to worry about the lights if your shades are open or what ever you have natural day light will come in. Fish in the wild when the sun is out its nothing like the brightness of the light bulb in your tank. :/ My fish get natural night and day except for people viewing under the light to see colorfull fish the best.

Thanks for all your help - down to the local hardware store I go - I hadn't thought about the timer thingies and I didn't realise they were so cheap :D
