ok well i would like to settle a argument with a freind about how long the light should be left on in a tank ? how long should the lights be left on in the day ? :D

I try keep mine on for about 10-12 hours...when I experience a algae boom, then i reduce the amount of light ;) If you don't have live plants lights aren't a Necessity...the fish can live without them, but live plants can't ;)

Going by all the research i have been doing on breeding fish the general recomendation is based roughly on where the fish would be living in their natural environment.

The general recomendations i have found are 12 to 14 hours of daylight which corresponds to the length of the day in the tropics and subtropical regions the habitat from which the fish originate.

Live plants need plenty of sunlight not just quick sparodic bursts. anywhere from 12 to 14 hours a day will help aid the growth of plants. Watch carefully that you do not over do it and start getting the annoying alge taking over through too much light.

Think i repeated my self on that question hehe , well thanks for that i win by the looks of it , my freind does has a few real plants in his tank but he told me that you are only suposed to keep the light on about 4 hours aday , i told him that with him having real plants that he should leave the lights on for longer , i leave mine on for about 12 hours aday .
