is it ok for the lights if i put them on that timer thingy that you use when you go on holiday in your house? that way its really nice to wake up with the light on and it turns itself off when i go to school, leaving the algae level down. is this ok for the lights?

I'm not sure if I'm understanding correctly but do you mean for example...

You wake up at 6am and turn your lights on and then say an hour later you leave for school and turn the lights off?

If that's what you mean, then, I wouldn't do it. I'd just wait until you get home from school and turn them on.

Yep - that's fine. In fact it's what the vast majority of people do to the best of my knowledge.

Nooo, well basically you know that timer thing that you stick into the socket and then plug your appliance into and you can set what time it allows electricity through? so for example you would plug a lamp into it and set it to come on at 7 o'clock to 9 in the evening so potential burglers dont think your on holiday, and you dont get burgled? well ive just used the same principle but with my fish tank, on at 7.30 till 9. off untill 4. on untill 7.30 or something. enlightened?

Ok, I understood what you meant then. I just didn't explain what I thought you meant very well. :)

I see others do it and I don't think it would be detrimental to the fish if you did, I just personally prefer to either leave it on or off for a length of time and not do it more than once a day. It's probably silly but it gives them more of a stable environment than having the "sun come out" 2-3 times a day. :)

Probably not a big deal either way.

It should be fine.

The only thing I'll say is that if you have real plants, then they'll need a longer photoperiod than about 3 or 4 hours - they will probably need 8-12 hours per day.

What is a decent amount of time to leave the light on? I have mine on a timer. It goes on at 5:30am just before I get up, and turns off at 10:30pm at bedtime. Is that too long for the fish, or does it even matter to them? The timer I have can be set to go on and off multiple times, but I thought that would be more stressful to the fish. And I don't see the point of simulating multiple sunrises and sunsets per 24 hours either.
