i am just turning my lights on in the morning and off when i go to bed i was wondering if there is a certain amount of light the fish and plants need as im going to buy a timer tommorrow and need to know the best setting times , ;)

They say around 10 -12 hours for plants growth. If you have no Plants then I guess just for when you want to see the Fish. As long as they're not in complete darkness all day long.

Fish dont realy need the light much, but the plants will need 8 hours. I leave my lights on for 10 hours a day, the fish are fine with that and the plants are blooming. :) .
So if i turned the lights on at 8am they would be turned off by 8pm.

my reef tanks lights get 12 hours of light from ten to ten. its a good idea to turn your lights on at the same time everyday to minimize fish stress.
