Lighting Request

AC

Please don’t be embarrassed, but I have never come across a more dedicated individual so ready to help and donate his own time so freely and with so much quality information, it is very refreshing to have met up with you, I am very grateful.

OK that’s been said!

Now I can move on, thanks a lot, I’ve got ‘lots’ to now direct my grey cells too, I love it! … Presently I have one red cardinal who is of ‘great age’ and is the sole survivor of all my past fish, I don’t have the heart to stress him by starting the overhaul and I will wait for him to move on before I start.
I have all the time clocks available and several 4 x way sockets to set up the whole lighting, co2 and whatever else will come to mind.
I will now purchase the scales and source the hypos for dosing and of course the powders, as you can no doubt tell I’m on fire! … and it’s all down to you.
I will be quite for a while now and give you some peace, …and will return to keep you appraised of what and where it’s at, thanks AC.

Kind regards Stuart

Hi Andy

I don't know if you are able to help me on this one, .. but here goes, .. syringe for ferts, unable to obtain one where I live I could only get a "Easy Dose 5ML Oral Medicine Dispenser" in 1ml segments.
Can you advise me of a supplier please?
Regards
Stuart
ps Koralia 1 and 150 scales arrived ferts any time soon.

i get my 1ml syringes from the doctors, 50p each, just ask and see if they have any, and my doctors can order cylindrical measuring tubes aswell made of glass quite cheap.

:thanks:
Thanks truckasauris, sounds like a good suggestion,.. will give it a try. :good:

The oral medicine ones are the ones I am talking about. I have some 3ml ones and 10ml ones. I use the 3ml ones because I use pond dechlor (much cheaper and lasts a lot lot longer as it is more concentrated) and it works out at 1.3ml per bucket of tap water.

I use the 10ml ones for things like ferts wher eI dose 9ml of this and 3ml of that etc.

ebay is your friend as always. I buy the ones with the blunt needles (can be a godsend for filling / emptying tight openings like some DCs etc.

Hi Andy ;)

I’m considering installing a ‘Aqua EL Unimax Professional 250 plus Ultra Violet’ (192139) which will filter 650 litres an hour, also thinking of including an inline ‘Hydor’ external 200w heater.
Interested in your opinion please…. ????

Regards
Stuart

thinking here Andy, its not big enough reading what you said earlier, so what about this one, 'Aqua El Unimax Professional 500 plus UV External Aquarium Power Filter

Ideal for aquariums (up to 110 gals or 500 litres). Crystal clear water for fresh water & marine aquariums. Pumps & filters 440 gals (2000 litres) per hour filtered water. Combines all the best features of the most popular external filters PLUS INTEGRATED UV STERILIZER. ?

I would think that the first one coupled with the Koralia would provide enough flow. Can't hurt to have more if you can afford it though. When you order the 200W heater make sure that it has the correct hose connectors. There are 2 versions one for 12/16 and one for 16/22 and if you get the wrong one it won't fit your hoses.

Thanks Andy, :flex:

You’ve helped make the decision as the bigger one would not fit in the cupboard under the aquarium; the smaller one is a lot less in turnover but an immense improvement on what I had before.
Thanks for the heater pipe line info, it’s a valid point to look out for.
Thanks again

Hello again Andy,
I'm just starting to install all my bits of kit after stripping down to basics, one of my new pieces of kit includes a 'Vecton 2' UV unit, now as my Unimax filter will pump & filter 145 gals (650 litres) per hour, the thought of using the uv unit 24/7 seems a waste, as the lamp has a one year life time would it not make sense to put the uv on a time clock say 3 hours every 12.
Your comments/advise as always appreciated.
Regards
Stuart

I used to have a Vecton2 200 but got rid of it in the end. lol

Not for any other reason than I didn't feel I needed it. It was big and reduced flow a bit. lol

Tubes are cheap on ebay.

Some people will tell you the following statement 'UV sterilisers need to be on 24/7 or you will get algae in it' Mmmm let me think, when the light is on it kils all algae that passes through it. When it is off there is no light. Mmmm how will it get algae????

I would personally use it 24/7. On constantly then the tube doesn't get switched on/off all the time. Also will kil anything that comes near it.

If you are going the powder route though I would now change what I suggested earlier because UV can break down the chelators used in trace mixes.

Therefore still use EI but instead of the previous regime I suggested I would do the following:

Solution 1 - 500ml DI water, 40g KNO3, 10g KH2PO4.
Solution 2 - 250ml DI water, 15g Trace powder

Dose 13ml of Solution 1 and 4ml of Solution 2 every day 7 days a week. (After water change on water change day)

Same amounts as before but just means that you are dosing daily rather than alternating etc and gives less time between trace doses.

I will find a cheap bulb for you what wattage is it? (The Vecton from experience will tell you it needs changing after 6 months. Can't remember what colour the light goes. lol)

:)
Thanks for the quick reply Andy, also for the ferts info, .. i will follow this.

I agree with you about the switching on and off, .. it must in time have an detrimental effect on the lamp, so 24/7 it will be, yes it is a big b----- -uv filter and it's proving difficult to get it into the cupboard underneath and leave nice un kinked bends in the pipe line, .. However it will be installed somehow.
The lamp is (had to really search for this info as there is nothing in the tech papers that came with it) on the unit itself: 230v. 50Hz. Class 1. 15 - 17 watts. IPx4. 1 x 8W G8T5 uv lamp.

The colour coding is basically green with a change to orange after 4000 hrs and then red after it's deemed ready for the bin, also as you mentioned it has a unique little timer that once set keeps you upto date on its condition.
Let you know how good it is when I throw the switches on commissioning day.
#Hope to buy in my plants this coming Saturday, he has a new delivery Friday night so crack of dawn Friday and I will be there. B-)
