Lighting Control

Hi all,

My older tank has a standard aquarium florescent tube, with external 'starter / controller' and the mains plug connected via a segment timer to the supply.

I've just purchased a new tank and it comes with integrated twin T5 lighting, which presumably has all the starter etc built in, as there is just a mains plug coming off of it. However this time around I'd also like to perhaps add some moonlighting to the tank. I've looked at a load of the 'cold cathode' threads and that seems to be a good way to go, I was just wondering what people generally use to control the whole setup?

I'm ideally going to want it to be dark at night, then switch the moonlights on for a few hours, then the main lighting to come on & moonlights off, then later main lighting off, moonlights on, and finally back to all off.

I KNOW I could do this with another segment timer, but they aren't exactly 'compact' (the one I have at the moment means you can't use the socket beside it on an extension lead!), I was just wondering if there is a better solution?
I've tried searching for lighting controllers, but all that seems to find what I would class as the black external 'starter' boxes for flourescent tubes.

Many thanks! :good:

this is going to end up as a "large hadron collider to crack a nut" !

But a pair of electronic timers for a fiver, and a 4 way extension lead for a quid.... badabing ! ;)

Ive have had NOTHING but problems with segment timers... best binned.

Hmmm, my only problem with the 'plug-in' type timers is that generally you can't fit things beside them in a power strip, ie. you buy a 4-way power strip, and put a timer is sockets 1 & 3, and thats all that can go in :(

I've look around and I now wonder if there is a UK version of something like this:

Coralife Power Center

I'm now thinking I'd also like to turn off my air pump at night to cut down on the noise it makes. I wouldn't say its overly noise, but make a noise it does. It's a Tetratec APS400, (just incase anyone has a comparable suggestion, that means I return this one and get a really quite one - lol)

This is true of segment timers - which are rubbish IMO... the contacts are forced apart mechanically, and suffer from arcing
I have several electronic timers ALL will fit together on a 4 way extension !

As for the air pump, you can turn it off - BUT only if its not used in filtration - when it should be on 24/7

Oh ok, perhaps some trial and error with different electronic timers then :)
Don't suppose you could say where you got yours?

No worries about the air pump, it's only used for extra airation to provide a 24" bubble curtain at the rear of the tank :)

You could always buy a plug adaptor (the cube shaped type that allows you to plug two or three plugs into a single socket). Plug the adaptor into your power strip (it shouldn't be too wide to prevent an adjacent plug from plugging in - although check first) and then plug the timer into the adaptor which will raise the timer so the parts that stick out won't affect the neighbouring plug.
That's if you want to stick with the segmented type.

Just an idea.

Netto are doing a twin pack for £3.99 at the mo, B&Q have a twin pack for £4.99 .... ALL only occupy one socket :good:
Argos do some too - but this is a "hands on" type of thing !

Brilliant, thanks all, I think I might have to go 'Timer Groping' at the weekend then - lol :hyper:

My B&Q didn't do the twin pack, and the ones in the single pack are too big to fit side-by-side in an extension strip :(
Will try Netto's today, the search continues!

Thats for all the replies, I opted for the argos ones in the end as they fit :)

Interstingly the triple pack was £14.99, where as the twin packs were £6.99 each. Needless to say I bought two twin packs for £13.98, instead of getting a triple pack for £1.01 more :)

YIPEEE !!! LOL Glad you are sorted... that maths IS a little odd !

Here are the timers I just bought from B&Q £2.99 each, 2 for £5.
