Im not sure about that but what i have done is bought a smaller watt bulb and starter which looks very dim in my 60G and have that come on first, then it switches to my bright bulb through the day and then back to the dim bulb in the evening, it looks quite cool and has the same effect....

it gives my tank a kinda reddish sunset glow :)

yeah ther ids its called a dimmer switch but i dont think it can be used on flurescent tubes

yeah i saw a topic on here yesterday when i was browsing that said you cant use dimmers on flourecnt tubes. i didnt read the article about why you cant tho. i will try and dig the topic out and post a link!

From memory (and I'm prepared to be shot down on this), there is either a lighting set or an aquarium (may be a biorb of sorts?) that comes with a lighting set that mimics natural daylight patterns.
That is, it brightens in the morning, stays on through the day and gets dusky at night and can 'replicate' moonlight during the night.

Can't for the life of me remember any more, but hopefully someone else will know what I am talking about! :)

can't quote a source on this I saw it on TV but you actually can dim flourescents. It's a new technology that turns the current off and on really really fast so that the bulbs dim. Not sure exactly how it works but I've seen it. ATM it's probly very very expensive and impossible to find but it can be done.

You're right, it's called an iLight, made by Reef One who make the Biorb/Biube - i've love a similar sort of thing on my 180L.
