I went to look for female bettas (found but the dead littered the bottom of their tanks), so I decided to check out the cannister filtration systems since my Mangnum 350 looks too old too use and I was approached by a sales man. He asked what I was looking for and I told him. He stated taht they didn't sell MarineLand cannister filtration systems and he also said that bio-wheels were a wast of time and money...anyways, I told him that I was happy with the small bio-wheel system that I had and that I wasn't planning on getting fish today anyhow be/c I was doing a fishless cycle. He balked at me and said that anyone who says that it works is "crazy". I told him he was crazy if he thought I was going to put live fish in an uncycled tank!! I left.

since it's so new most people haven't heard of it.
However I have no idea why he thought the bio-wheel was a waste of time or money.....my guess is he's one of those people who are very set in their ways.

The fishless cycle is known almost exclusively by those who heard it on the net, or who heard it from someone who heard it on the net. None of the lfs around me know about fishless cycling either. It's a fairly new concept.

Some people swear by biowheels, and others are indifferent. It is expensive compared to non-biowheel filters, so perhaps he thought he was doing you a favour by not recommending it :dunno:

when shopping online the cost difference isn't that great really.
when you consider an emperor 400 is like $37 USD online.

I agree with Sky042. Many people that have kept fish for a while are very set in there old ways. I know people that swear by UGF and don't even know about cycling a tank (or care to find out). They just do things as they've always done and if the fish die, they attribute it to disease from LFS tanks.

Maybe you're right... I just noticed that for the same Marineland Penguin Filter (Mini) it costs $8 more to get the biowheel at Big Al's Online. People who don't think biowheels make a difference would think it is a waste of money to spend an extra $8 on a biowheel when the filter runs just as well without it (or so they think).

like the others have said, Fishless cycling is a fairly new concept and many fish keepers of the older generation tend to stick to their old habbits (cycling with danios)

After shopping around for filters a few months ago, I wouldn't even CONSIDER buying a filter at a brick and mortar retail store at this point.

Online is the way to go. LFS's and chain stores get 75 US to 150 US for an Emperor 280 while online they are about 35 US plus shipping (which isn't much).

recently a brick and mortor store I was at wanted 149.99 for a fluval 304
Big als price is 72.99

The fishless cycle concept is not new... it has been out there for YEARS, and there's no reason for people who work in fish stores to not know about it. Most likely, they know about it, and just want to sell you the fish to cycle with.
