LFS Advice

Yeah this is a messed up situation, and I really haven't seen it happen yet, mainly because at the fish store I go to - the guy knows his stuff. I do most of my research online too, but I still expect the people at the shop to know about the fish they carry. I understand that for some people it's a part-time job and such, but if I owned a shop I would train my employees if I expected them to give advice. I wouldn't start judging a person for not knowing, but I also don't agree with their methods of making up answers or just trying to sell stuff. If I ever saw this happening, I would make sure to pull the customer aside and inform them of the truth, in a kind way of course.

I would just like to point out how many times people on THIS FORUM are told to do research before getting fish. "Research Balas, reasearch bettas" etc. Now people are also saying that the customer shouldn't research. When you lot know everything about fish, criticise.
I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? Do you mean that researching info on a fish you plan to purchase is a waste of time? That someone else should do it for you?

I personally am constantly researching. If you ever find someone that claims to know everything about fish, be very very skeptical of anything that comes out of their mouth. Information that was available 5 years ago is now outdated in this hobby. Fish that I have kept and bred in the past and should be familiar to me can teach me new things if I keep them again. Fishkeeping is a learning experience.

I agree that you should be able to get reliable advice from your LFS. An occasional slip-up or bit of wrong information can be expected now and then...nobody is perfect. But, I think in this instance I would have had to say something, and let the manager know what is going on. Anyone running a decent shop would appreciate you doing this.

well chook, i went to crossroads today after my trip to sydney, and i heard basically the same thing.

Question. Are these fish ( pointing to the frontosa's) ok with them over there (pointing to the swordtail guppys)
Answer. Yea they will be fine, just keep the frontosa feed.
lol they will eat the guppys for breakfast.

And some other person asked everyones hated question( for a betta person.)Question. In summer last year i got a really beautiful looking fighter fish and i woke up one day and it was dead, are they cold water or do u need a heater?
Answer Both female and males need cold water

i dont know much about bettas but i know they need a heater ( i think males can survive in cold water, correct me if im wrong)

This was the guy poofie looking bloke who has no idea indeed, just makes me sick sometimes

This sounds suspiciously like something made up.
