I've read quite a few references to using lettuce as an alternative food source for some herbivorous inverts when tank-grown food sources run out. The sorts of things I've seen it recommended for are certain nudibranch and large snail species. Just wondering if anyone else here has tried it at some point, or has any reasons why it is ok or not ok to do? I've seen the lettuce thing recommended on Dr. Fosters & Smith, otherwise I would have dismissed it as bunk, since putting vegetables in a marine tanks seems odd to me. I use it as fw snail food and have done so for ages, but I'm just not sure how safe it is in marine systems, or if safety is dependant on water volume.

I dont see any reason why not... If the fish/snails like it, it would seem suitable. I dont see it posing a large risk to a tank especially if fed moderately. No worse than putting some nori that goes uneaten.

Its ok, it just holds little nutritional value. Youd be better off woth Nori. But for snails, give it a shot.

Thanks for the feedback! I may try both lettuce and Nori...although currently I have no idea where to find Nori lol. I know it must be in a grocery store somewhere, but I havn't found it yet. I'll try the lettuce first since I have that on hand. I'm hoping I can find something to distract my big Turbo from eating the sponges over my filter intake :S it eats whole sheets of the expensive LFS seaweed stuff in one sitting so I'm looking for alternatives.

You can find Nori at most grocery stores. I believe it is used to wrap sushi so you may want to look around the sea food area or if the particular store has a japaneese section.

Some believe Nori is preferred over terrestrial plants because it is what our pets would consume in the wild...

I found Nori!!! $2:00 for what would cost me $10:00+ for the same volume otherwise...coolness 8) it wasn't labeled "Nori" though...had a really long name that I can't remember lol.
