i have liked these fish for a while now and after seeing a fully grown specimin the other week ii really want one

my only concern is that ive heard that they can be quite aggressive. i know that a single fish is better than a group but i dont want it to start on my oscar or barbs....

so has anyone got one or had one?

I had two 6 inch of these about 15 years ago and I rememvber selling them back to the LFS due to their aggression and nipping. I recall they must have had hard lips or something as they took big bites out of caudal fins. I can;t recall what they were kept with though

beautifulk fish though

They can indeed be very aggressive. Sometimes they're kept with things like mbuna that hide away in the rocks or else have enough speed and attitude to work. But generally they do poorly in home aquaria. In public aquaria, funnily enough, they're actually quite docile.

Cheers, Neale

so would you say to avoid one in my tank Neale?

stocking is -

5x2x2 -

1 x large oscar
9 x arulius barbs
1 x bgk
1 x jaguar catfish

Matt.

The jag would hide all day, and the barbs might be fast enough. But the oscar would be an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Some more general thoughts on this genus in an article I wrote for TFF, here:

thanks Neale. after reading up on them i dont think its worth the risk especially as the tank is all about the oscar......

I saw some of these at my lfs on the weekend.
Am so pleased I deicded to do my homework first and not buy them on impulse!

Do look at Anostomus instead; they're smaller, colourful, and within reason mix nicely with active midwater fish.

Neale,

How big do these get?
I have Ropes in the tank......

Anostomus get to about 10-15 cm in length depending on the species. I wouldn't personally mix them with ropefish, but you might be okay if the ropefish are able to hide away if they get harassed. Anostomus tend to be a bit nippy sometimes, and they are territorial when kept singly, though in groups of six or more this is less of a problem and they become fairly peaceful schooling fish. The obvious parallel is with tiger barbs, and I'd choose companions for Anostomus in just the same way as you would with tiger barbs.
