Hi, all. I'm relatively new to this forum and this is my first post. Been reading a lot of posts to help get my tank up and running. Thank you all for all the info you post.

But for the reason I'm posting today. I recently bought what was labeled as a "Rare Leopard HiFin Swordtail." Has anyone heard of these or seen them before? My girlfriend called me a sucker, but I pretty much got them just because the sign said Rare. It's the most I've spent on a fish so far (only $9.99). Was just wondering if I really am a sucker or are these really rare? Are LFS usually telling the truth if they advertise something as rare?

I looked on google and couldn't find anything but one post asking the same question. THAT POST

Along with the pics in that post, here are some that I took.. hard to get a good picture, he has been hiding since I've got him.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

He is a beauty! I dont know if he is rare or not but I have never seen one like that before.. I would have paid that amount for him too!

Looks like you got sold a green sword mate. Pretty common where I am from.
Edit - LFSs almost always lie in my opinion. Mine has a group of feeder size comets marked as rare breed of goldfish.

Beautiful swordtail!

Who cares how rare it is or isn't or what anyone else thinks. All that matters is if you enjoy it.

Too bad you don't have a female also!

That is a nice looking swordtail you have there Mattvillas. It almost looks like the nezzy swords, Xiphophorus nezahualcoyotl, that I have in one of my tanks. I have never seen them referred to by that name, but common names are avoided by serious fish keepers for the simple reason that a simple common name can be used to describe almost any fish while a specific scientific name can only be applied to a single species. I also keep some X. montezumae who are similar but have a bit longer tail than yours relative to their body length.
Either way, your fish is gorgeous.
