I have a 10 gallon tank with 4 cories, 1 dwarf frog and a few livebearers. I left for 3 days and I came back to all 4 of my cories dead! The nitrates are .25 and nitrates are good.... I dont know why they died. I have a few plants in there and I just noticed a big of brown algae on the side. Any ideas?

Were they fed while you were away, or bless them if they been digging for food they might of gotten a bacteria infection with eating old decaying food, sorry for your loss.R.I.P.

Hi Jen21 :)

I'm sorry to hear about your corys. :byebye:

When you went away, was your house closed up? If it is hot weather, a small tank could heat up quickly and that can often lead to bacterial infections. Sometimes they can act very quickly.

I would suggest that you do a good water change and watch your water parameters to help your other fish stay healthy.

ooops sorry... the nitrItes were .25, but nitrates were good. I dont understand why only the cories died and everyone else is ok. We had the air on so I dont think the tank got too hot...

because nitrItes are toxic. plus some cory cats are just more sensitive than others (a good example of this are panda cories).

Pandas definitely. My new trio are sick with finrot and I'm hoping they live. None of my other fish, including my younger albinos are sick at all thankfully.

I agree a nitrite reading above 0.20 is lethal to fish.

Hi Jen21 :)

They are right about the nitrites. Please do water changes to bring them down to zero. Then watch them and do water changes as needed until your beneficial bacteria builds up enough to keep your tank properly cycled again.

Once this happens, it will be safe to gradually add more fish again. :D

BTW, what kind of corys were they?

They were albino cories. I know that nitrites were toxic, but I didnt think they would kill my fish at that level... They were fed but I guess I dont know if they were fed enough.

RIP little guys :(

R.I.P. cute little fellows.
