 lol..

Don't forget, one of the whole points to the TF hobby is to have something that's the opposite of all the other fast, high-stress-pressured things in your life. Tanks are all about "slow." They are all about that moment when perhaps its night and just the tank light is on and its just you and the tank and you go into sort of a trance just sitting perfectly still and looking. Slow, patient, habitual care goes right along with that and can help you get a kind of special "zen" if you will, for the whole process.

it better be some special zen.. LOL

Right day 17 and results are ammonia 2ppm and nitrites still off the chart.... seems that the ammonia hasn't been processed quite as quick as the last few days.... hmmm

Got some decor in the tank now to liven it up a bit to try and help me be patient.....

I had similar readings, then the ammonia/nitrites suddenly bang down.,keep at it :good:
now they've slowed again, and are sticking at 0.25 at the 12 hr mark...

Patience is a virtue..... :D

well fingers are crossed for the nitrite spike to come down.... i cant help keep popping into lfs's but its not helping my patience lol..

got the scape done now in the tank so its livened it up a bit and i'll be re-arranging it a bit so that'll help with passing the time

Nice touch, putting the "Day" in the subtitle! good one

When I look at your case and see the nitrite spike at 17 days I think of the several cases where the very first dosing of ammonia had not even dropped to zero in 3 weeks and no nitrites had even shown up!

not sure exactly when the spike occured or even if it has but the nitrites have been reading off the chart for a while now...

day 18 and run out of ammonia test liquid. got API multi test kit on order but being a friday it prob wont be here till monday/tuesday. i'll just keep adding 4ml (2ppm) of ammonia till then...

sorry to butt into your thread but reading this ive noticed waterdrop say someone has passed day 100 , is this because of the size of a tank? will a small tank cycle faster than a bigger 1 or am i being stupid? lol

Tank volume should have little to do with the length of time of a fishless cycle (although there could in fact be some subtle factors in that that we don't tend to thing about much and its true that very small tanks do seem to be somewhat less predictable in their cycles in my experience here as compared to larger tanks.)

Remember that the amount of ammonia added to the tank is adjusted to create the same concentration no matter what the tank size. For example, to get a 5 part per million concentration in a large tank requires that a lot more ammonia be squirted in than in a small tank. So the ammonia food that's seen by the bacteria as it flows by in the filter is the same. The bacteria need ammonia to eat and oxygen to be supplied by the flow of fresh water. Given that they get that and good places to anchor and grow their biofilm slime coats, their slow growing time is often the main factor in the length of cycling.

day 20 tested and the nitrites appear to be dropping now as the colour is taking longer to develop and is reaching around the 5ppm mark in 5mins :)

some new pics upload to my tank pic thread..... check link in first post.. let me know what ya think :)

woo hoo got my API multi test kit through.... all tests to be carried out tonite :)
