would it be ok to way down my plants with big led fishing whights?? is it safe for the fish?? regards alastair

Well most plants you buy have a strip of lead wrapped around them so i see no harm in lead fishing weights! As long as you aren't teying to catch your own fish!! :)

The "lead" fishing weights plants often come with are actually zinc. As to lead weights in fishing, those are often real lead so I would not use them.

How would you use a Lead fishing weight? As I recall, Lead fishing weights were spilt sphere which you squashed onto the line. Try that with a plant stem and you'll damage it, it will rot, and the top will float free.

Small quantities of Lead in a tank are pretty harmless. They do not dissolve much in tap water, and the water is being replaced at regular intervals so it doesn't build up. Zinc is actually more soluble in most conditions.

There are several types of lead weights that aren't the squashable kind. I never liked those. There are types with a hole through the top where you string the fishing line through. I prefer those as you can reuse them and they're not prone to breaking apart.

ok so what sort of non lead waights can i get???

Ok Vectrum,

1 way of doing this is buy having some irregular shaped stones and using fishing line to attach them to the stones therefore u will not have any metal in the tank u dont want.

my personal option is to take the leaded weight off the plant and put it in the gravel, when it starts to grow the new roots hold the plants down by them selves.

but you have also got to be carefully of which type of plant u have if its got a rimzone dont burry it under ur gravel, make sure its in level or above the gravel/sand.

I might be wrong but I thought that "lead" fishing wieghts were no longer allowed to be made of lead due to swans and others eating them and getting poisoned. They are just still called lead..........????

The most popular brand in the U.S. (Water Gremlin) hasn't made lead weights since 1993.

I'm pretty sure it would be nearly impossible to find actual lead weights in any reputable fishing supply/ bait shop.

Well, like I said most "lead" weight you find for plants are actually made of zinc. It's been over 10 years since I last went fishing actually so I'm a bit outdated on the lead fishing weights but I do know for a fact the ones you find for sinking plants in aquariums are zinc or some other safe metal or mineral if not zinc.

:hyper: well i think if i use a sink that would stop the plants floating but no room for my fish

Hey,

I went into my LFS and asked for 'lead' to weigh my plants down, the guy gave me a strip of something which I took to be lead, but thinking about it now, it probably wasn't. It was properly packaged with pictures of little fishies on the box (or something similar), so I'm sure it's fine for fish. That, and of course the fact that it's been in there for about 3 years with no apparant ill-effects...

Oh, and very good Vectrum, very good indeed.

Those are the strips we've been talking about. I don't know why they still call them lead weights. I guess it's just out of habit.
