Led Vs Fluro Lights?

Hi,
im thinking about investing in some LED light for my tank.
I am currently using and aquarium fluro that is the length of my tank.

can LED's be used as your main light source? or would i be better off using the fluro?

Is one better than the other for the fish or does it make no difference?

If i did get an LED i'd be using the white, no colours (not yet)
I have no live plants and the tank does not get any natural light.
