Led Build

Yes, they're the LED's, but you'd be better off getting knock-offs from Hong Kong as they're a lot cheaper, if you were to use 6 of them you'd need a driver with an constant current output of 350mA and a transformer of 24V

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it!

Ten's probably too many for me though. Probably

How did you calculate the current and voltages required?

i'm interested in making some led lights, how do you calculate how many and watt power you need to replacing the existing lights, at the moment my tank has 2 24watt t5 tubes :)

You'd be better off with these as they're mounted on the little stars: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6X-1W-HIGH-POWER-LED-Star-White-120LM-140-DIY-light-/270705992381?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0755a2bd

I'd fit heat sinks to them too, just to stop them from getting too hot, working out the voltage required is easy, take the maximum operating voltage of the LED, and multiply it by the number in the circuit, so for example with the LED's I linked:

6*3.6V = 21.6V the minimum operating voltage is 20.4V, so you'll want a power unit that puts out 24V as the LED driver generally runs at about 1-2V too. The LED's draw 350mA of current, so your driver will need to match this in order for them to work, if you provide them with too much current they'll burn out.

Look for 10 LED's if you can get them, it gives you a reserve then should you get any duds or damage any.

Here's a suitable driver:

Thanks. So can I just wire this all up to a 12v supply like a mobile phone charger? I think a pc power supply is overkill

Were did you get the power supply from I have all my LEDs heat sinks and double sided heat pads and driver on order just need the wiring and power supply

Yes, but the mobile phone charger needs to have a current output of 350mA+, 12V will power 3 LED's and the driver.

I got my power supply from ebay.

Could you use that driver if you only planned to use 2 or 3 of the led's and could you.link to a suitable power supply please.

The minimum input is 9V, so you'd need at least 3 in order to not over power them, a 12V adapter such as this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-DC-POWER-SUPPLY-ADAPTOR-CCTV-CAMERA-0-5-AMP-/380362464998?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item588f5e9ee6

Though I'm sure if you look around the house you'll have a 12V adapter with a current output of at least 350mA.

Thanks i might have ago at a build for a nano im setting up.

So for 6x 1w setup, one driver would be sufficient, however I would have to supply 24v, not just 12v? Sorry, so many questions - I want to thank you for being so very very helpful on this
