Lava Rock

Can you use lava rock in marine tanks for base rock? I only ask bc I have a very large piece that I have no use for in my other tanks, so I though with all the crevices it would make good base rock.

IMO, not a good idea. Some lava rock can harbor and release toxins into the environment, it's exceptionally difficult to keep clean, and offers no buffering capacity to the tank...

Lava rock, I assume you mean volcanic (igneous stuff)....I wouldn't - it can contain heavy metals and other minerals which could leach out into the water. However, the high pH of a marine aquariium can mitigate this - metals leaching out is much more of a problem with acidic water.

It's in one of tanks right now, but I'm re-scaping it so I will be taking it out. I hate the thought of not using it somehow... it cost me $20 from a lfs! But, if it's not safe for the saltwater tank then I won't use it there.
