Kuhli Loaches

So, i spotted Blubble has some Kuhli Loaches, and i must admit, im a little jealous, i think there beautiful little things.

Now i have a 72ltr (2ft x 1.5ft x 1ft) that finished cycling about 3 days ago (10 days of solid 0ppm,0ppm for NO2 and NH3 now) im just "feeding it" 2ppm every other day as i go france for 3 days at the end of this month, and to Greece again for 8 days the week after, and i dont want to put fish in and not be there for their first few weeks.

The plan is to have a very Cory based tank, and i was looking at 6 (Sterbai), and perhaps a betta, or some other type of centrepeice fish. Now im looking at just Corys, and im wondering, how many Corys in total could i have, no more than 8?

And alongside these, could i have Kuhli Loaches, or would they get too big and rule the bottom of the tank? Also, i know Sterbais will be happy with up to 28'C, what about the Kuhli's?

If i cant, im buying another tank as soon as the first one is stocked, i already have my eye on a 5ft with cabinet...

If im way out, just tell me im an idiot....

If the bottom area of the tank is 2*1 ft, then 10 small Corys (dwarfs, etc), with a recommendation to not go near larger Corys like sterbais; if the bottom area is 2*1.5 ft, then 10-15 small Corys or 8-10 medium-sized Corys. Keep in mind that numbers do depend on your set-up, I base mine on heavily planted with plenty of bottom swimming space for Corys.

From personal experience, khulis do best in groups of 10+ and in 3+ ft tanks.

I personally think that Bubble keeps very poor stock, far from what is best for the fish, so I can not recommend their stocking as an example.

Hi Kat, Many thanks for the advice, ill leave the Kuhli's for another tank then! Time to sweet-talk the Mrs into letting me start another tank when this one is ready!

The bottom of the tank is 2ft x 1ft. Its 1.5ft tall.

I really did want to get Sterbai's, but only 6-8, so is this a definate no-no until i have a bigger tank? If so, would Skunks, Bandits or Three line (Julli/False Julli) be ok?

In a tank that size, I'd stick to one of the three 'dwarf' cory species; Corydoras pygmaeus, C. hastatus or C. hasbrosus.

The other cories get bigger than people think (and chunky) and 2'x 1' just wouldn't give them enough room, IMO.

Cheers FM, so no Sterbia's! #41####, everything i have wanted so far, has been "blown out of the water".

Ill have to keep looking. Im tryin to match my partners "I want pretty fish" and my, "I dont care what it is, as long as its interesting to watch in the tank"! (Oviously however i am considering the fish's living requirements!)

..as suitable for that size tank, but 3 of those are extremely rare (in my experience). What I forgot to mention was that I recommend only one species.. yes, time to beg for a new tank

Ive just gone through them all on Google, isn't the Gladysae nice! I bet that's one of the rare ones yes? I will be, its always the ones i pick, that are either impractical, or impossible!

Ive posted it in the Cory section in case its not been seen before, found it when i clicked a photo.

Its a shame a lot of it is in Russian, but you can glean the basic info, and its childishly easy to navigate, I guess if you really needed more info, you could use Google translate!

Any ideas on likely places i would find any of the Gladysae?

Isn't that the seller who doesn't know anything about the fish, just labels them as what they receive from the wholesaler? /me remembers something about orange cockatoos being sold as triple reds

Don't think so, but its an actual shop in England.

Have you considered half a dozen pandas? Your tank is just shy of being what i consider a decent size for standard corys but you could get away with pandas in there. Plus if you decided to upgrade to a real mans tank ( ;D ) in the future you could bump them up to a dozen.

For a tank that size you could look at the pandas and maybe 10 endlers or something small but colourful to make it nice to look at. Corys, although cute, dont really make attractive display fish.
