Hi All,

I was wondering if Kuhli loach were O.K as a starter fish. I have just seen some in a lfs and they look fascinating. I have no fish in the tank yet as I am still getting it ready. I was thinking of putting maybe a couple of these in, Is this a good idea or not?

Thanks,

Richard

So, are you fishless cycling? After you've done that, you can add pretty much whatever you want since the filter will contain more than enough bacteria. If you're just leaving it to run empty for a while then adding fish, don't, do a fishless cycle.

hmm, kuhli loaches look great in the shop.

I got mine home and they just hide where ever they can. If your planning to have decorations or plants in your tank you wont see them very often because they love to burrow under everything. Mine only come out at feeding time.

I think Danios are a fantastic first fish, they all really hardy and they are fun to watch darting around and chasing each other everywhere

don't say you can pretty much put whatever you want in a tank to a newb...

Khuli's are good starter fish. In my experience they are very hardy too. they do hide though so it might be best to get a large number of khuli's so you'll actually see one from time to time. 6 or more would be good. Not sure what size tank you have but a good beginners tank would be something like 6-12 khulis 6-12 danios and a trio of healthy dwarf gourami...1 male 2 female. People say that dwarf gourami are not very hardy and this may be true but I've had good luck with them. You can add some other fish as the centerpiece. Just make sure they are all compatible. the GENERAL rule with fish under 3-5 inches is 1 inch of ADULT fish per US gallon. This does not apply to all fish though. For example dwarf puffers need atleast 5 gallons of water and should not be kept with any other type of fish. In general it is much better to understock your tank than to overstock it.

Oh and do not trust your LFS employees. Some are great...some seem great.
