just wanted to make sure. the top one is a male and the bottom is female? i tried reading on how to tell them apart, but i simply cannot.

the big one most only stays in its cave, hardly ever come out :(

its hard to tell but I would say the top is the male and the bottom one the female, the female looks plumper in the body. The top one you can see the dorsal fin stretch back to the tale fin. And on the bottom one the dorsal fin looks more rounded.

So I would agree with you. See what everyone else thinks too though. :good:

I have the caves and everything setup (as you can see in the background). if given the right conditions what are the chances that these two will spawn? is it hard to find a couple?

also right now the male is kind of nipping at the female from time to time. I don't know if this is a bad sign? I just got them about 24 hours ago. all the male seems to do is wait at the enterence to his cave with his head sticking out and kinda chase the female away when it gets close. should I be worried about this and maybe try another male? or you think this is natural behavior and they might be a couple later on?

Looking at the female she would seem to be in the mood for spawning, Mine bred for fun infact I 've just removed the female and 20+ 1" fry and swapped them for some malawi.

Remember one thing though, Kribs will protect their offspring to the death and sometimes in a community tank this can really upset the flow, mine were originally in a 350l and wanted to claim the entire tank once the fry were free swimming and although nothing ever got injured the stress levels were at an all time high.

When you do end up with fry they will tend to be one sex "I ended up with 1 brood of male and another entirely female".

yes I know they will become very protective. all that's in that 29 gallon with them is 5 neons and 3 little black stripe tetras. I have another tank I can put them in if the kribs spawn. so that won't be a problem at all.

right now its about the 3rd day. the make is still most in that cave. the female is always either near the cave or at the enterence to it. whenever it sees the male or knows its watching it does the courtship shiver and the "u" shape bend to it. I have seen the male shiver back twice. so maybe they are starting to get along. there isn't very much nipping anymore. I tried to put another male in there but they both attacked it so I had to take it back out.

You better kiss those neons and stipes good bye. The kribs will eat them, even when not spawning. I wouldnt say the female, isnt exactly in the mood for spawning, because her belly isnt deep, so it cant be full of eggs. I have a wonderful 1 and a half inch female who has wonderful colors and hasnt spawned. Bright colors usually mean spawning, but in some cases, it is just that the fish is unusually beautiful and very happy. Kribs need no help spawning, for them it is a sport. Just gove them some good water, balanced diet( might want some frozen bbs), and warm water. What are your water stats? I have known kribs not to spawn with nitrates over 70.

the tetras are to big for the kribs to swollow. they dont even really pay attention to them at all. they are e always swimming together and right in front of each other.

the kribs never stay away from each other now. i have 2 caves set up at opposite ends of the tank. they spend most of their time together in one of the caves.

water:

79degrees
ammonia 0ppm
nitrite 0ppm
nitrate less then 5ppm

Please keep us posted on what happens, I got a pair of krib's on Friday and I'm really hoping they'll breed. the only thing I'm worried about is that the BN cats will eat the eggs.

well from what i hear they are extremely protective and they can keep the frys alive even in an aggressive african cichlid tank. but i will keep you guys posted on what happens. i cant wait to see some fry myself :hyper:
