Kribs and water changes

Stress Coat contains aloe vera which is not good for fish long term as there is evidence that it can coat fish's gills. It is better to use a water conditioner which does not contain aloe vera or any other substance "to promote the slime

All you need to add to a tank is just one water conditioner and if the tank has live plants maybe plant fertiliser. If you use an anti algae chemical, that is detrimental to fish.

Seachem Prime is useful when tap water has chloramine as a disinfectant. It splits chloramine into chlorine and ammonia, removes the chlorine and detoxifies the ammonia part so it doesn't harm the fish until the filter bacteria have had time to 'eat' it.

Where tap water has chlorine, the best water conditioner is API Tap Water Conditioner. This contains just 2 chemicals - one to remove chlorine and one to bind metals.

The fewer chemicals we add to a tank, the better.
Oh thanks thats helpful good to know. Hey btw, this isn't related but I can't change my details on my account. Is it easy to edit or do you have to go into the app?

It depends on what you want to change.

If it's your user name, you have to contact an admin to do it.

Anything else, click/tap on your user name at the top of the page and select 'account details'. In there you can change everything from your avatar photo to your location to your password to preferences.

If you can't find what you want, message me and tell me what you want to change - don't do it in the open forum where anyone can read it.

Hey so what do you use? Prime? I use prime and another type of conditioner. Anti - Algae formula and ammonia and nitrate digest. ( Not all at once) 😂
I rarely use prime to neutralize ammonia - maybe once in the past 18 months on a new aquarium. My normall pipeline i use carbon to remove chlorine and nothing else.

fyi - all my dwarf cichild; and while kribs are old world tehy are not old fashion; prefer water changes after all who wants old stinky water when fresh water is well fresh.

Of course things can go south if the fresh water has harmful chemicals like chlorine or is freezing cold or boiling hot so i don't want to say that a good water change never kills a fish but a well done water change is always welcomed even if the kribs never actually tell you they love their water change.

I prefer to condition my refill water in a separate holding container with air stone to remove chlorine and heater to balance temperature. I add nothing unless absolutely necessary.
