Hey guys. I got a female kribensis about 3 weeks ago for my 17 gallon aquarium. She's been simply flourishing, and she is showing bright coloring. I was looking at her today though, and I noticed how extended her dorsal and anal fin was. Could this mean that perhaps "she" is a "he"?

She has an eye spot on her dorsal fin though, so....?

I'm new to kribs, so I'm not completely sure.....

Thanks in advance.

at a guess i would say female but someone who vhas kept them will advise you better than i can
regards scot :)

Yes, that is a female. She is gorgeous! Eye's spots are worth about a large grain of salt when sexing kribs. Both males and females can have them. Just look at the stomach, if it's round, it's almost always a female. Golden fins, red pelvic fins, deep colored bellies, all clasic signs of a female.

Thank you very much! And that pic does not do her justice! Her red stomach is 2x brighter than that in person! She is a lot fatter today, can't wait to get the male in there! :hey:

Thanks again!

Oh yeah, and it looks like she has a protruding tube coming from her anal end, as you can see in the pic.... Do you know what that is? It has just developed over the last couple days....?

Thanks.

That would be her about ready to lay eggs. SHe will have some probably tomorrow. But obviously, they wont hatch.

Oh no! I'm getting a male on Saturday! Lets hope she waits till later, and then, maybe the male will want to fertilize them.....
What will she do w/ the unfertilized eggs?

Thanks.

Don't worry, she'll have more. I doubt shell wait for saturday. I would expect this time tomorrow you have a lot of eggs. She will watch them and defend them, but they will fungus.

Ughh, I don't like that fact. :( Poor eggs.

Thanks a bunch for the advice. I am new to kribs.

It really depends. Next week? Next month? I have no way of knowing. I would estimate in the next 2 weeks.

Thanks a bunch. Can you identify the gender of these young kribs for me? I bought them from a pet store near my house two days ago, hoping to get a male out of it. (Because the store I got my female krib from isn't restocking for a long time)

It's okay if you can't tell - they are very young:

Thanks again.

P.S. In the second pic, the krib has a lump just before his gill..... Is that okay? I didn't notice that until I got home with him..... :/

The second krib is a male. All the rest are females. The lump may be a tumor. It won't stop him from breeding, but it may end his life sooner than normal.

Thank you. Will the tumor keep growing and growing? Because I don't want him to be suffering, dragging around a really heavy tumor all the time..... :/ (Wow, that sounds weird, but it's true....)

Thanks a bunch. :D
