Hi All,

Getting back into the hobby and trying to determine if this tank is a win for a betta fish tank - i may get it some fellow fish but ultimately i'd like the betta to be happy

I've seen some concerns about filters so wanted to see if a betta would work here + any tips people have on optimizing the tank

It's the shape I don't like - cylindrical tanks distort the view of the occupants; and that one looks tall and thin. Personally I'd go for a rectangular tank and shallow rather than tall for a betta - they need to gulp air and they have to swim a long way up with tall tanks.

@MaloK ruthless but acknowledged. @Essjay acknowledged; i may hesitate on using the tank then, tbd - any suggestions in the 5 gallon range? also what about good partners for a betta

I'll have to leave suggestions for a tank to members who live in the US.

Tankmates for a betta - in a tank this size, maybe a snail? Preferably something like a nerite which have small antennae - bettas have been known to bite off larger antennae with snails such as mystery snails. Possibly shrimps, though they may turn into an expensive betta snack. I've had a betta which ignored shrimps and another which dismembered them.
The only fish suitable for a 5 or 6 gallon tank are very tiny shoaling fish and they would live their lives being terrified at sharing a tank with a much larger predator. Fish big enough to cope need a much bigger tank.

Bettas have very varying personalities. Some are so laid back they get bullied by tank mates. Some otherwise peaceful fish just can't help themselves when faced with large fins and bite chunks out of a betta's fins. Some bettas are very aggressive and will attack anything that moves. Of course the majority are between those two extremes but it is not unknown for things to go great for a few months, then the betta snaps and goes on a killing spree.
That's why it is not usually recommended to keep any other fish with a betta.

I would search for a the largest footprint fitting, in your setup.

The bare minimum would be a standard all glass, 4.77g (18.05L) Semi-Braced Aquarium, 16"L, 8"W, 8.5"H

For a betta alone.

Now if you ask me... That cookie jar with a good big sponge filter and a good light a couple plants could make a stunning Cherry shrimp tank.

They would look bigger and stretched all around...
