I am thinking about using my new 125 gallon tank as a koi growout. I am thinking about getting a few 2 inch or so baby koi. I want to put them in the 125, and let them grow a bit, then pit them out in the pond in the spring. How many could I put in there for the inter, and how much would they grow in 6 months?

I think you could have as many as you want, since you will be moving them and they have a very little chance of stunting in a 125 gallon. They won't be producing a whole lot of waste when they are still babies, also. Maybe 10 or so? And I'm not too sure if koi are slow growers or fast growers, either. But I don't think they will grow a whole lot in 6 months. Maybe a few inches?

From http://www.vcnet.com/koi_net/intro.html
It is not uncommon for a small Koi to grow 2 - 4 inches a year in a backyard pond.

deffinately not ten.

i would say around 5, maybe even less.

koi are very fast growers in the rght condition and will produce alot of waste. Your filtration should ideally be rated for a tank twice the size of yours to deal with the waste they will produce.

you also need to think about how many your pond can take. how big is your pond?

 now theres a Contradiction

5 tops for koi as they will grow fast and will produce a lot of waste, a 2" fish is no longer a baby and youl be suprised at how fast some of them can double in size ,your "2 will soon become 6"

its a question of speed as well koi are fast and need plenty of space ,

people often forget when dealing with tank sizes you have to take into account water displacement you may think its 125 gallons but add gravel ,filter etc etc and it soon becomes less
