Hey,

I have what used to be a pond in my garden and I want to restore it to a point where I can keep Koi in it.

I took some photos of the sorry state it is in which can be seen below. What sort of money am I looking at having to spend to get a Koi pond of this size up and running? I have NOTHING at present.

The pond is 3.2m x 3.2m x 0.5m which would be around 5120 litres.

Any advice much appreciated!

Its coming to the end of the koi/outdoor fish season now in the uk :(

The pond imho isnt deep enough. Koi like atleast 1-2 meter deep pond. koi need tip top water so your need pump, filter and UV 4-6 times turmover (for koi) should do it ideally you need a skimmer too you can spend ££££

due to lack of space i keep comets, goldfish and shubunkins pond is around 2 x 1.6 x 0.6M runing a hozlock 3 teir filter,UV and a titan pump. next spring i hope to fit a overflow type skimmer

tlc-direct do some good deals on the hozlock pond equipment (cheap swa too)

You certainly won't be able to put any fish or plants in until next spring. I wouldn't advise adding water until Autumn, as otherwise you get a lot of the leaves in the bottom. You maybe might not need a skimmer, i have quite a deep pond with koi carp in and no skimmer. Good luck!

ponds way to small for a koi pond needs to be at least 4ft deep at least with a bottom drain going to the filters.

to get that pond up and running fora koi pond you will be looking at about £1000 imo for the filters, media, pump, uv, air pumps
really depends on if your making it bigger or not. if you dont plan to make it deeper. you would have to ideally stick to goldfish/shubunkins

the turnover for a koi pond should be about once every 2 hours. my ponds about 2,500 gallons and the turnover is stated at about 1,500 gallons per hour (so realisticly after the pipe work/other restictions it will be nearer 1,250gph. remember koi arnt from flowing rivers :good:

uv is worked out by 10w to every 1000 gallons

First step with that pond is to make it deeper. The other dimension are pretty good.

Filtration is down to how much you want to spend really, as said for a basic chamber filter your looking at about £1000-1500 total with filter, pump, UV and pipework.

A gravity fed filter with pump return using a bottom or side drain is a much better option for koi ponds with big filtration, but pump fed and gravity return isn't out the question it just narrows down choices.

Personally my koi pond is around 2000gallons and is power by an aquamax 6000 pump. It has a side drain which leads into a prefilter vortex with brushes, the pump is dry mounted pulling water from this vortex which then pumps into my Bubble Bead filter, runs through the UV and returns to the pond at the other end.

Now my filtration is pretty much the best you can buy so to filter it like this will cost about £2000, maybe a touch more.
