So I'm reaaaaally interested in these Koi fish, mainly a showa koi.

Please give me somethin?

I have a 55 gallon but thinking of maybe getting something bigger, or doing a pond in the summer for them as I am aware they grow up to about 3 ft
If worst comes to worst I would have to sell them to someone that would take care of them.

Any suggestions?

Sadly this is to small for koi. Koi need a much larger tank, where talking 100+ Gallons. From what I hear they need a lot more swimming room then can be provided in a 55 gallon. Think of them similar to Clown Louche. They should be kept in groups and grow very very big (Guessing on groups but I think I'm right). Your best bet for cold water species are goldfish, White Cloud Minnows and Dojo Louche. I know there are a few more but cant think of them off hand.

can you help me find a fish that maybe looks like a koi but is smaller that i can put in a 55 gallon?

i reaaaaaally like the showa koi.. how its black white and orange
thanks guys!

Don't even think about it. Either build a pond or simply don't bother. You said yourself you know how big they get, therefore why even think about attempting to keep one in a tank that it will outgrow in a few short months?

If you have space for a decent sized pond in your garden, plus a decent filter for it, then build that first. It's no good getting a baby Koi and keeping it in a 55 gallon in the hope you'll complete the pond by the time it outgrows the tank. You can't even begin to predict what sort of setbacks you might experience with the building of the pond and installation of the filter.

Seriously, if you're that desperate for a Koi, get your pond finished and out of the way before you think about spending all that money on a show standard fish. They are FAR from cheap as I'm sure you know, and the last thing you need is for it to become stunted or unwell whilst it's crammed in a 55 gallon tank while you build a pond.

A Shubunkin, by which I mean ONE Shubunkin ( as they are the largest of the common single tailed goldfish and can easily reach 14 inches long ) would be suitable for a 55 gallon tank. For tankmates ( and more importantly bottomfeeders as goldfish often waste a lot of food which they will eat alongside their regular food ) you could opt for Weatherloaches, as they tolerate coolwater just as well as mid to low tropical temps, and are very gregarious and entertaining to watch.

That's true koi's are only for ponds how about 1 common plec

koi need at least 200+ gallons per fish. not 55 or 100.

i would only put a koi in tank around 50 gallons is if i had no other option (needed to treat a certain fish individually and the quarantine pond if already taken up) amd i was under 8 inches. (again would be the lkast resort + for a short time)

my filters alone are about 250 gallons and isnt the best filter for size pond (wasnt informed properly by a dealer i first trusted)

if you thinking of building a koi pond post on here and i sure a few will help out
