Sorry i dont have any pics right now but I have a pleco that is an orange/golden color and have no clue what kind he is. Ive looked in every fish directory I can find and still have had no luck. He is also about 6" and doesnt like to come out of his cave. Thanks a ton for any helpful replies.

A better description please :) would help a lot. Is this a solid bright yellow ? Or any other markings whatsoever ? What about the nose - and stubs or bristles on it ? Any idea even vaguely of what you bought it as in the shop ? What does it like to eat ? How long have you had it ? And during this time, what has the rate of growth been?

Ive told you pretty much what I know so im sorry it hasnt been to helpful. It was actually given to me by a lady that couldnt keep her tank anymore. Its not yellow but more of a dark orange. As far as his nose and growth im not sure as I dont see him much but he seems about the same size.

Sorry without more info we could be posting photos forever and a day for you to eliminate :/

You'll just have to browse through all the L-number catfish on Planet Catfish. There are hundreds I'm afraid. Good luck :good:

No need to say sorry its not your fault. I dont like to bother my fish so hopefully he will poke his head out soon and I can get you more info. Thanks for checking back to see if you could help.

Sorry I just messed that last post up but the fish I found isnt the same as mine. This is what i found http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/speci...?species_id=905
It is the same color and body but face isnt the same.

That's sounds promising already. If your fish is 6" and you're not sure if it has bristles or not, it would almost certainly be a female (if it is a bristlenose). As they only have tiny little stubs (and sometimes barely that even).

IO finally got a look and the face looks really smooth but everything else looks pretty much the same. Thank you all so so much for your help. Im really glad I stumbled upon these forums.

Are you sure it's not an albino or chocolate albino colour morph of the common plec (liposarcus pardalis)? They're really very common (mainly sold in Pets At Home and the likes).

These are some pics of my old 5" liposarcus pardalis - he was "chocolate albino", but others can be paler/yellower.

Kathy thats him! My is JUST like that except mine is a deep orange color. I have never seen one this color so didnt think it was a common plec. Thank you all so much for your help I feel better knowing what he/she is.

He was a cracking fish, Hannibal, wish we could've kept him, but at the time I was wrongly sold him as only growing to 6" and my tank was only 39g then.

We've also got one of those! I didn't know what he was until KathyM also kindly helped me identify him. Great fish but growing very quickly. Ours is also quite shy. Can't wait for him to get full size, I think he will look amazing!

Hope you got plenty of room in your tank for this guy as he's gonna get big, and quite quickly. Ours has grown a couple of inches in the last couple of months!

The "official" scientific maximum standard length (ie. from nose to beginning - not end - of tail) is 13.8", but many people have seen common plecs grow a fair bit bigger. :good:
