Kitchen Sponge Disaster

i wonder you properly cycled your tank in the first place, di

Like I mentioned earlier, my tank started out really messy. I didn't know about the cycling thing and I used interpet cycle for 2 weeks to help alleviate the situation along with daily water changes.

OMG, i cried when i read this thread. I'm so sorry for your loss clarousel, i really am! If you need anything please don't hesitate to ask me

you sure it was a clean sponge ? cos i use them to clean my tanks iv not had a problem yet im wandering now if i should stop?

Always a good idea to rinse out/off anything that you're going to put in the tank. Even items that are made for the aquarium. You never know if any residue is left on there. Also with items like the sponge, it's best to rinse with declorinated water.

Thank you Blubble37, that's really sweet of you. I'll be cleaning up tomorrow and starting fresh. I hope I'll know what to do!

Mhmm! Straight from the packet! Everyone tells me I should've rinsed it a few times before using it. We definitely don't use those sponges with soap in it so I guess it's the chemicals in 'em :/

ohh right iv not had a problem with mine yet but i keep useing the same ones (as i know there clean)

Yeah using old ones are fine. I've been using a ratty old sponge for awhile till my mum threw it out. I really wish she hadn't!

iv been thinking of getting one of the magnet cleaners to be honest they seem easyer

thanks creeker maybe i'll avoid it then save some money

Some sponges contain an antifungal or antibacterial agent in them. When you buy sponges, read the package and make sure they don't have either of these.

Checked water parameters this afternoon and they are as follows:

Ammonia: ~0.25ppm
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates 5ppm

I did a 50% WC. Will continue to check daily and do WCs!
