Khuli Loach Completely Buries Itself In Gravel!

Hi, i have 4 Khuli's (more to come) 2 are dark coloured, 2 are yellow and black. and today i seen a tail sticking out (one of the coloured ones) of the gravel, i put some food in the tank, then the whole khuli went completely under-gravel!! he was definately alive as he was moving around a bit.

Is this normal/safe that they completely bury themselves under the gravel?

It isnt fine gravel, its just average sized gravel (marina brand)

My red-tailed loaches did that and I had gravel too. They were fine and have grown to 6-7" each; now in a friend's tank.
