:hey: OK made the mistake of buying some fish that weren't labelled on the tank, but they were cute and are currently sitting in a tank by themselves until I know exactly what they are.

They are defo cihclids (SA variety), look a bit like keyholes except instead of the dark spots being vertical they are horizontal, and they have a dark strip over their eyes. body is quite rounded as well, their size at the moment is approx 4cm .. oh and one of the fish has only one blotch and the other has two blotches virtually joined.

Will try to get photo's but they are hiding at the moment so it is hard, as soon as they start coming to the front of the tank I'll get one posted.

In the meantime any good cichlid ID sites I can visit ?

Fishbase is your friend. If you visit the the Find Species page, you'll see that there's a pull-down menu that adds a number to the web page address. Add a 3, and you get all the species in South American rivers, thus:

Your fish sound like some sort of Cichlasoma, perhaps Cichlasoma portalegrense (the Port Acara, a lovely fish) but do also check the Laetacara and Mesonauta species too.

Cheers, Neale

Hmm checked the fish against some of those listed on the website and still not quite seeing them, managed to get some pics (camera phone) in the tank of them and they are quite round bodied and the black blotch has a sort of golden ring around it. I'll upload the pics and see if some cichlid fan can recognise them.

They are shy but not as much now so come to the front of the tank to be fed, cute devils.

Thanks for the link I've now put it in my favourites :good:

OK managed to upload my photo's so can anyone help ?
