Keeping Veggies Down ?

I use "tie irons" bits of stainless steel used for holding the two sections of a cavity wall together. one iron will make you 3 or 4 weights. they cost very little, often found lying around any building site. all you need is a good pair of snips.

I have a large supply, here. anyone in Leicester who wants some just let me know. they are more practical then a screwcumber (much smaller) and don't cost, well much.
 
Would the lead weights off of the bottom of live plants be ok to use?
 
I sometimes use bits of the lead plant weights, but they tend to get lost in the gravel once the veggies are gone. My lfs fastens cucumber slices to small rocks with rubber bands, which seems to work very well. I like that method because you can use a decorative rock.
