edit im looking at getting a group of them say 5-7 so if i need a bigger tank i will have to see what i can do!

the two standard 'norms' I hear a lot is 20 gallons per pair or 2 square feet of floor space per pair.

If you go with all males I would want about that same space per male.

Since Rams are primarily bottom dwellers you shouldn't have many issues with the hatchets and neons.

i had hatchets in with 2 rams n i found that the rams were shy, thats their nature. it seemed that no mater how much i fed food that the rams wouldnt get any becuase of the fast activity n the tank. i say give it a go, rams r soo cool

in my experience, rams like to be in groups of 6 or more, solitary, or in a pair. 40 gallon would be plenty big enough, that combination should be fine. hatchetfish like to be in large groups also, along with neons. you just got a bunch of schoolers! good luck.

p.s. you might want to put some corydoras in there to, they would fit in perfect with that group.
