I have noticed I have a slimy substance between the glass and the filter casing in my tank, does anyone have any tips for cleaning this area?

yeah remove the crappy in tank filter and get an external

That's a plan in the future but at the minute I don't have any money to spare on a new filter

in that case i dont think there is an easy way to clean it. it cant really be seen anyway so i wouldnt worry too much.
