Hey there my fellow aquaria enthusiasts. I bought a used Trigon 350 from a military guy, back from England. Though I got a good deal on it, it came without the front light fixture (100 CM) and the heater (hooks right into the filter). I could use some advice as how to come across these things, along with filter media, for a cheaper price than it would ordinarily cost me to order from a large site, and/or from Europe. I'd appreciate any referrals or feedback. Thanks...

Also, would anyone know of the US equivalent of the media (sponges) and heater (hooks onto the filter) so as I would just have to order the light fixture...?

Rip the filter out and buy an external! much better, as for heater buy two and have them at opposite ends of the tank so one acts as a failsafe

The light fixtures are renowned for being poor quality and breaking down, it might be worth an investment into another brand of lighting.

As for the sponges, I'm not aware of anything special about them so if it is proving hard to source some or at a daft price I'd make my own by cutting up some sponge filter material to the correct shape.

You could also try eBay or aquabid.

I defintely need an external, as you have said. I would be nervous bout ripping the internal out. How do I go about doing that, besides really carefully?!?! I have heard that many people do that when hey find the filter to be next to useless. But, I am afraid I'd break the thing.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am likely to get a filter, co2 system, and betyer lighting, leaving it open-topped. Oh well, I only paid 300 US dollars, and it looks nice.

I just pulled it off...no problem. Thanks again! What kinbd of filter would you run on this tank? I was thinkin of a Fluval Fx5 or another canister with a heater and/or UV sterilizer built into it.

don't worry about the filter, you are probably better off if it breaks anyway. run a craft blade along the silicone holding the case in the tank, they will part one by one. i would advise against "ripping it out", not to say it wont work, but i find fineness a better way of doing things.

i would run two eheim pro 2's or an FX5
^^^^^^^^^^

I'm going to go with the FX5, and I'll have a FLuval 3 and a UV sterilizer mounted to each side, both internals that look exactly alike. I'll hide them with vals positioned in each of the front corners of the tank. This would create more current and give me a little extra filtration. I may stick with the lighting and just get adapters for conversionl. Apparently, they updated the lighting to 2 45 watt T5s on the front fixture of the Trigon 350 (100 centermeters). That is the fixture I'd need to order. I have the backlight, which is a T8 fixture with 2 15 watt bulbs. Question...can I run T5 bulbs in a T8 fixture???? I no nextto nothing about electric....so foregive me.

LOL....It came out pretty easy, but, yes, you could say I pretty much ripped it out. There is no way I could have maintained a planted tank with that thing (filter). How is this setup conducive to saltwater (i.e. the filter and the lights)? It isn't even sufficient for planted freshwater. They have some nerve

the Juwel item is, in fact, a power head driven sponge filter. it has no, appreciable, mechanical filtration. its also crap!!!!! I don't believe it would be any good for marine. as Truck says, many marine use "live rock". but it is possible to keep marine with a "standard" filtration system. thing about "live rock" is, you get lots of "freebees". as the rock is full of critters.
