well u'll be glad to know i think i solved it. Turns out if you build the filter unit up complete with powerhead and motor etc then fill with water, air was getting trapped right at the op in the propellor housinhg (motor). Just took it off and loadsa air came bubbling out so put it back together and seems to have stopped blowing air...........

yeap air gets trapped inside the powerhead when you fill the tank back up, the simplest way to dislodge it is once you've filled the tank back up turn the pump on and stick your fingure over the outlet pipe for a few seconds, you should here the air bubbling out of it then remove your fingure, might take a couple of goes but does the trick
