I got one of these tanks about a month ago. It came with filter and heater unit in the tank.
Set it up added water, but it would never go over 24c. I was only 100W heater which isnt for a tank that big. So i got a 200W one and its fine.
Now i dont think the filter is good enough either, i always have dirty water and i do changes and that.
Any one else got one of these? :dunno:

ive not too long ago set up an rio 180,i think you should of taken the heater back to the shop and explained your problem (with receipt). and i have added a fluval 4+ to my tank set up. water is v,clear.

Juwel tanks are great but their electrical equipment is crap, particually on the larger models. We started out with a Rekord 120 as our first decent sized tank which was great, so obviously when the time came to get a larger tank we opted for a Juwel again, this time a Rio 300. This turned out to be one of worst wastes of money i have ever made, within 4 months the heater had failed as the 300w heat supplied just wasnt big enough to keep 300 litres of water at 26c, Juwel replaced this under warrenty with it only to happen again a few months later so i upgraded to 400w visitherm at my own cost. Next the lighting unit failed and on inspection was found to be full of water (presumably condensation), again Juwel replaced this free of charge and admited this had been a problem with the Rio 300 and 400 range, the lighting unit went on to fail twice more within a year but the last one it was replaced with has now been good for over a year so hopefully they now have this problem sorted. The final thing that put me off Juwel tanks for life was when the 10 month old powerhead for the filter decided to fail, during the hottest weather ever recorded while i was on holiday. As the powerhead was supplying 99% of the surface aggitatation which kept the water oxygenated 3/4 of the fish in the tank sufficated at a loss of several hundred pounds worth of fish, Juwel replaced the powerhead free of charge but said they were not accountable for loss of fish. After that i removed the Juwel filter completely.

Another large problem with the Juwel filtration system is that because it is attached to the tank there is no easy way to clean inside the filter housing, over a relatively short period of time a lot of gunk becomes trapped inside the filter and becomes an active nitrate factory which causes horrendous algea problems, i advise anyone with a Juwel tank to stick a syphon down inside the filter housing next time they have the media removed to see just how much crap has collected down there.

The final problem which seems to occur a lot is that the plastic band that goes across the middle of the tank to brace the front and back walls has a tendency to snap off causing the glass to bow alarmingly, this has happened to my tank and several other peoples that i know of, if the tank is in warrenty then Juwel will replace these bars free of charge, if not they cost £12 each as i found to my disgust.

I recently brought a vision 180 and deceided not to use the internal filter supplied. Why do they stick the filter casing to the glass!!!! They should just use suction cups so the damn thing comes off. I had a very worring half hour trying to gently remove it without damaging the glass! Also the cutouts they allow for the external filter pipes are not deep enough. I have a fluval 404 canister and the pipes dont fit in the gap and allow the lid to close. Other than this not had any problems with it.

That's all very worrying as I have 3 Juwel tanks! Eeek.
Can anyone tell me which filter/heating systems they replace the Juwel ones with please. My 45g 'vision' tank doesn't seem to filter properly but it also has an Eheim so I clean them alternately.

I own a Rio 125.

Ive owned it since January and found the lighting useless so i will be adding extra lights this coming January.

Also i have found the filter be useless aswell,it is always dirty and when i clean the filter media i get a load of crap ending up flaoting around the tank. I will also be tearing out the filter an dupgrading to an eheim external in January also.

I have no problems with the heater though.

However it is a very nice tank to look at.

What wattage heater did you get in your rio 125, i only had a 100W and it wasnt anywhere near good enough. I now have a 200W project heater. Works really well.
Might have to look into a better filter then.

I have two Juwel tanks and have not had any problems save quaite big one on the Rio 400 brace snapping. As CFC mentioned it has happened to a lot of people.

Otherwise i havent had any other problems (touchwood). They usuaully good tanks fpr planted set ups, but if you are going to keep the likes big pooing cichlids then additional filtration is probably a good idea.

My Rena is far superior, but unfortunatley more expensive.

I have a rio 180. The equiptment it comes with should be left in the tank. I have no problems and i have discus.

I myself have had very few problems with my juwel 70 but will check inside the filter housing for exess gunk. In future I'm definately changing brands though, the lighting just isn't enough for the ammount of plants I want to keep.
