i have had a juwel rekord 800 tank for some time now and i was wondering if the 4 sponges inside the filter box need replacing regularly??
i have just been cleaning them myself once a week when i do a 20% water change. am i cleaning it too often?

I have a Rio 125 with the original internal filter still in place, I only clean the filter when I notice the water flow slowing down. I would have thought once a week a little too much unless you have a lot of fish in there ?

As for replacing the sponges you don't have to do that unless you see the sponges deteriorating, something I wouldn't expect to happen for quite some time yet.. you should be OK for a good few months yet

the sponges will last years...just rinse them monthly in old tank water.

A few people have mentioned to replace the green nitrate remover every six weeks. I believe the carbon filter should be removed entirely as it is only useful to clean out medication.
