Juwel Rekord 120 Tank With Cabinet In Black

well i disagree, discuss need 15 - 20G. and on that basis you would get 4 in at a squeeze but it would be a squeeze. plus, the tank is not quite big enough to have ample hiding places such as plants reaching the surface and large pieces off root wood etc. plus discuss not only look better in groups of 6 they are also more comfortable as they they are amoungst 'themselves' and therefore they dont become so easily spooked. they will also settle in quicker and as a result the colours will be better as they will be happier. look at petertr's tank. thats a rio 300 and that is very nice. he only has 5 discuss in that tank, so i certainly wouldnt put 6 in a rio 240. and you say 'at least half a dozen!!' so that implies more. i suggest you do some research into the fish, especially if you are keeping them.

Having bred several thousand discus over the years I think I'm competant enough with the species. I've seen Jo's fish and know the current size. She won't be buying additional fully grown 8" adults so adding another four will be ideal until they pair off. Which if kept properly they certainly will do.

Personally I like to see them in planted tanks. But there are many who keep them in bare aquaria. Intersstingly enough all the truly experienced big boys in the discus world would think nothing of having more than 6 fish in such a tank. Have a look at the works of Degen and Watley for more info etc.

I disagree with them being happiest when kept alone to. They are often more active and happy when housed with a shoal of suitable dither fish. As are many quieter cichlids.

Anyway, as I said, when they pair off, they'll need to be managed. Moved into a seperate breeding tank if she wants to raise the young etc. So you were half righ on the "do more research" front I suppose. Knowing the existing size and the aquarists fish and future plans beforehand before passing comment helps. ;)

Sorry for derailing the thread Jo.

Merry xmas everyone.
