Hi All,

I hope someone can help me, I bought a Juwel 125ltr fish tank I've set it up and running it before I put my fish in it, my only problem is the water seems to be getting really hot as in 36 degrees hot I don't understand why, the heater is inbuilt in the filter I can adjust the temperature on the top I turned it what I think was all the way off the water seemed to cool and so I turned it up slightly and left it overnight I've checked again this morning and it's back up to 36 degrees.

What am I doing wrong? I'm supposed to be picking new fish up today but I can't really put them in a red hot tank.

TIA

Steph

36c is indeed hot.....hotter than most heaters are made to run to. Sounds like a faulty heater. Contact the company you purchased it from and ask for a replacement.

what sort of thermometer are you using to check the temperature?

I've put in two thermometers to make sure I wasn't making a mistake I've got a glass one that you stick on the inside of the tank and I also have one of them digital ones you stick on the outside of the tank.

You could easily have a bath in it, it's that warm :( lucky I didn't put any fish in it, it would of fried them

yep, definately sounds faulty then......back to the factory it goes!

I do have a spare one that I bought for my other tank but it was too big for it, it's 300 watt will that be ok until I get a replacement?

Thanks for your help

Great thank you, I just have to wait now until it cools down before I can get it out :)

I'm getting some Endler guppies are they friendly with other fish?

Thanks for all your help

Endlers are very friendly & very very colourful, good choice, just remember to get all males or all females or you will have a tank full of them in no time.

Tom

ps. as to your OP I agree with all above, the heater thormostat is stuck on so the heater is constantly running.

In your first post you mention that you've had the tank up and running and are now ready to introduce fish...... have you heard about 'cycling' and how to correctly establish a bacteria colony in your filter prior to adding any fish? This is a critical part of the hobby that is rarely detailed in the tank manufacturers instructions. Please do take a look at our beginners section and have a read through the 'cycling' topics. They will explain the process in detail.

Hi Zoddy, I've had tropical fish for a while, I've got fish in my other tank I'm just upgrading really I've put the sponges out of the other filter in this one to give it more of a start. I'll have a look at cycling to make sure I've covered everything.

Thanks for you help :)

I have covered the cycle I've done all the tests so looks like I'm ready to go.

I've just put in the new heater because the other one had cooled down, the water is still quite warm at 28 degrees but no light has come on the new heater to say it's working, will it be working? I turned it to one click because there's no indication on the top of how warm it is only on the side does it say how many degrees it is.

Steph

normally the light on a heater only turns on when the heater is also on - if the heater is set at lower than 28c it wont turn on until the water drops below the temp you have set it at.

Ok great, would it be ok to put fish in water thats 28 degrees?? I wouldn't want to fry my new friends :) It didn't feel too bad when I put my arm in but I am human so it might be roasting to a fish.

why not just wait for it to cool? Or simply remove some of the water and then add some cold (dechlorinated) water to top it up and bring the temp down.

....unless you are buying fish that like 28c+, like rams or discus for example?

I have been letting it cool it was 36 this morning I'll carry on waiting :) I'm getting some Endler guppies I guess they like around 26ish?
